Expanding our EV charging stations

The Warehouse Group will increase public access to electric vehicle fast charging in more areas by installing eight additional charging stations at regional The Warehouse stores, thanks to a $265,000 grant from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

The additional charging stations will expand TWG’s existing network of 24 chargers at The Warehouse stores around the country offering free EV charging. The new chargers will be located at each site in Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Royal Oak, Gisborne, Petone, Greymouth, Rolleston and South Dunedin.

TWG Chief Sustainability Officer David Benattar says the company is excited to be working with EECA on delivering rapid EV charge solutions for its customers and the growing number of EV users in New Zealand.

“We see the ability to offer greater access to fast charging for our customers as an important new step in our commitment to championing the essential transition to EV technology in New Zealand. This will have a direct and positive impact on the country’s progress to a decarbonised economy. As an EV driver myself I know that improved access to charging removes a key barrier to EV adoption.”

The grant was one of only 21 projects, out of 71 eligible proposals, approved by the EECA Board for funding. EECA CEO Andrew Caseley said, “Making EV charging available and visible is a great way to encourage EV uptake, which is vital to decarbonising transport in New Zealand. The Warehouse Group has shown real leadership in making chargers available, and in transitioning its own fleet to electric, so we’re really pleased to support this project to expand their charging network.”

The grant will further bolster TWG’s EV commitment which is an integral part of its broader sustainability programme and action on climate change in New Zealand. Last year TWG met its goal to transition 30% of its vehicle fleet to EV before the end of 2019 and recently committed to all future acquisitions of its light fleet to being EV. This month marks The Warehouse Group’s first anniversary of becoming Carbon Neutral and CarboNZero certified.
