32 The Warehouse locations across New Zealand will offer the service via collection bins, accepting items including produce bags, frozen food bags, bread, rice and pasta bags and more.
“We are committed to operating in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way, and programmes like this help our customers live their lives in the same way,” says David Benattar, The Warehouse Group’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We had tremendous success the first time around and are glad to see the support increasing for this type of programme.”
The plastics collected through the programme are recycled into a range of items, with pieces this year going to 2nd Life Plastics and Future Post, organisations that turn plastic into cable covers, garden edging and fence posts for agriculture and farming.
Since first launching in our stores in October 2015, close to 15.5 million individual units of soft plastic have been collected to date and diverted from landfill. That equates to nearly 70 tonnes.
Malcolm Everts, Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme Chair says: “This scheme is an incredible opportunity for New Zealand consumers to become more aware of their waste. Having partners like The Warehouse on board ensures accessibility for consumers across Auckland who will have the opportunity to reduce their plastic waste and turn it into functional, sustainable products, made here in NZ.”
