Noel Leeming celebrates 50 years in Aotearoa

Noel Leeming is celebrating 50 years of helping Kiwis this month, with great deals on tech, plenty of customer giveaways and support of a new charity partner.

The iconic technology and electronics retailer was founded in 1973, with the first store opening in Barrington, Christchurch. The brand expanded throughout the South Island before opening its first North Island store in 1986.

Noel Leeming was bought by The Warehouse Group (TWG) in 2012, and now has 67 stores throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, and over 1,500 team members across its stores, distribution centres and TWG support office.

Noel Leeming Merchandise Lead Jason Bell says: “At Noel Leeming we want to bring new technology to Kiwis first, and our mission is to help customers use technology to improve their lives. This has always been the Noel Leeming way, and we’re excited to be celebrating right through June.”

When it comes to bestselling technology, Kiwis have been consistent across the decades. In the late 1990s, video tapes and volt guards were the most popular products, and in the 2000s Kiwis were all about blank CDs, $20 phone cards and photo printing. From 2015 things changed gears, and Google Chromecasts became the number 1 product, before Apple AirPods took out the top spot in 2021 and 2022.

“Since 1997, we’ve sold 2.7 million headphones, over 1.5 million laptops, and more than 2.1 million TVs,” says Bell.

“Back in 2011 we spent some time selling 3D printers and there was a time in our history where we also sold lawnmowers, so we’ve tried plenty of different products to help Kiwis get the tech they need! Sadly, we’ve said goodbye to fax machines though, selling our last two in 2020.”

The brand has expanded over the years to include a strong service offering, with Noel Leeming’s Tech Solutions launching in January 2011, with the first ever home visit in Manukau, Auckland.

The Tech Solutions team have installed more than 130,000 TVs in Kiwi homes since then.

Noel Leeming’s celebrations will also include supporting Orange Sky, a New Zealand not-for-profit that provides free laundry services, warm showers and genuine conversation to people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

Alongside a donation from Noel Leeming, customers will be able to show their support by adding $1 at the tills in all Noel Leeming stores across Aotearoa from June 19th to June 25th.

For the rest of June every Noel Leeming store across the motu will be celebrating with epic tech deals and all customers who spend over $50 automatically go into the draw to win one of two weekly prize packs of $5000, and one grand prize pack of $10,000.
